I. M. Pei took the geometry of Suzhou's classical gardens — whitewashed walls, dark tile roofs, framed views — and rebuilt it in steel and glass. The result sits next to the 600-year-old Humble Administrator's Garden without competing with it. Pei called it his 'little daughter'; it was his last major building.
