A single continuous roof 500 m long — the largest in China — covers a mall, offices and a hotel on the shore of Jinji Lake, and its curved steel ribs read as a pair of wings from the water. It is the social centre of the new Suzhou: locals come to eat, shop and walk the lakeside promenade in front of it.
