Haikou’s defining district. The qilou arcade form came back with overseas Chinese from Southeast Asia: the ground floor is set back as a covered walkway against sun and rain, with homes or shops above. Best preserved along Zhongshan Road, Deshengsha Road and Xinhua North Road, where white, cream and pale green facades run in an unbroken line. Free — go by day for the buildings, by night for the lights.
